A Message from Interim Superintendent Bruce Watson
October 14, 2017
Dear Glen Rock Public School families,
Following is the text of a letter that I sent out earlier this afternoon to the parents of our middle and high school students. It concerns an incident that occurred yesterday, Oct. 13, which impacted the school day for those students. I feel the particulars should be shared with all of you, the greater GRPS community.
Regards,
Bruce Watson
Interim Superintendent of Schools

Dear Glen Rock Middle School and High School Parents,

I’m reaching out to you with regard to the situation on the GRMS/HS campus yesterday, Oct. 13.
Late yesterday morning, the high school administration became aware of a potential threat against the school building, stemming from a dispute between a Glen Rock student and an individual from another community.

Glen Rock Police were contacted and upon their arrival, the district was directed to issue an immediate on-site evacuation of the campus. Staff and students followed our normal protocol and evacuated to their assigned places on the perimeter of the campus.

As the police began their investigation, they determined that the threat of a bomb was unsubstantiated and therefore directed that the staff and students return to the building. Simultaneously, an interview with the Glen Rock student was arranged in the high school principal’s office. Again under the direction of the police, the campus was placed in a Hold-in-Place while the interview was being conducted.

Because of the prolonged interview, it was decided that the students would remain in their classrooms until dismissal. It was also felt that in deference to the comfort level of the students, middle school students would be released at the high school dismissal time of 2:54 p.m., rather than hold them until 3:07 p.m. In addition, all afterschool clubs and on-site athletics were cancelled.

I am pleased to report that as of this morning, all school activities on campus have resumed. The police are continuing their investigation of the situation. I will share any further developments should that be necessary.
Regards,
Bruce Watson
Interim Superintendent of Schools

Standardized Assessment Schedules
September 28, 2017
Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:7C-6.6, school districts and charter schools must, by October 1 of each year, provide parents or guardians certain information on any State assessment or commercially-developed standardized assessment that will be administered in that school year.

The information provided in the attached chart is a tentative standardized assessment calendar.  The administration date indicates the window available for testing.  Each respective building will be creating testing windows that will provide for the least amount of disruption to the educational day.  If a student is permitted extra time or any other accommodations, the respective school administration and Special Services personnel will work together to schedule the appropriate accommodations.

Links to testing information, background data, and/or sample test problems where available for each of the specific tests are included in the chart. As each testing window nears, parents can expect a letter from their child's school detailing their specific protocols for that test administration.

If you have any questions, please contact your child's school.

Please click here to view the chart.

The district is required to report to the BOE and the public the exact grade reports issued by the NJDOE. An Important Letter from Principal Thompson
October 30, 2017
The following letter was sent out on Sunday, Oct. 29 to all Coleman School families via Genesis.

Dear Coleman School families,

We are reaching out to inform you about an HVAC situation that occurred over the weekend in the building.

On Saturday afternoon, our school custodian discovered that a hot water pipe in the ceiling of the Media Center had burst sometime earlier that morning, resulting in a flood of the Media Center.  An emergency cleaning company was called in immediately and they, along with me, Mrs. Marinos and members of her team, worked throughout the weekend to begin the clean-up process, dehumidify the room and salvage as many books and other materials as possible. Our vendor has assured us that there is no cause for concern about mold as we caught it quickly and the leak came from a clean water source.

At this point, staff and students will not be able to use the Media Center for approximately two weeks as we restore the facility. However, we are making provisions for the students to receive their media center time by way of a cart.

Families will be kept apprised of further developments as they occur, including a firm re-opening date as we progress through the restoration process.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,

Ed

Students will enhance their skills in logical thinking, collaboration and communication while coding. This program will foster educational and entrepreneurial innovation, inspire creative-hands on learning and strengthen problem solving skills.
Chef It Up 2 Go!
Kids in grades K-5 are the top chefs in our fun-filled programs. Each week the menu and program changes, but the fun never ends! We will have classes using kitchen gadgets, have totally cool cooking battles, visit different countries, try new foods, conduct fun experiments with food science and more!
Boosting the Basics Writing Workshop: This six-week course offers students in grades 3-5 the opportunity to hone their writing skills in an after-school setting. In this course, emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of writing such as: sentence structure, paragraphing, figurative language, and grammar.
Mixed Media Funk: Children's Art Parties Join us for three weeks of fun! You will be painting your interpretation of masterpieces; Picasso and Van Gogh. You will use bright, bold colors and fluorescents too. You will create your own modern, funky creations by incorporating collages using beads, wood, shiny paper, puffy paint and more! For grades K-5.
Keyboarding: This self-paced course teaches proper finger placement, memorization and navigation around the keyboard. Good keyboarding habits will benefit students with the new online PARCC assessments. Sections for grades 2-5.
Going Gaga from the Gagasphere: Gaga is a popular fast-moving ball game played inside a “gaga pit”. The game is often called the “playground equalizer” because it is designed to be enjoyed by all ages and all athletic abilities, no special skills needed.  Easy to learn, easy to play, Gaga is a great way for the kids to be active and have a ton of fun! Grades 1-5.
Study Skills Essentials for grades 5-8 provides students with the necessary tools that are imperative for success upon entering middle school and beyond. Topics include organizational skills, time management, test taking skills, following directions and long term planning.

Parking Reminder
January 13, 2012
This is a reminder that parents picking up Kindergarteners must use parking spaces around the loop or on the street. Parking in the staff lot to pick up or drop off kindergarteners is prohibited. The Police Department has granted permission for parents to park adjacent to the yellow curb in the traffic loop at dismissal time to pick up morning kindergarteners; however, you may not leave your car unattended at any time.  This is a fire zone and you will be ticketed

Parking in front of the school, in the staff lot or in front of the angled spaces is prohibited at any time.  Do not drive through the parking lot at any time to pick up or drop off your child.  This is for staff access only.

Please be certain every caregiver who transports your child to and from school knows and understands the procedures.  They are in place for the safety of our entire school community.

Reminder: Dogs are not allowed on school property at any time.
