Clara E. Coleman School

Clara E. Coleman is a pre-K thorough grade 5 elementary school. We strive for an atmosphere where students, staff and families feel proud, secure and committed to supporting each other. This positive climate contributes to the success of our educational program. Teachers work together to map the curriculum, aligned to the Common Core Standards. Materials are recommended as part of the district 5 year review cycle. Teachers are implementing instruction to prepare students for the Spring 2016 PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College & Careers).

Coleman School has an integrated language arts program with a concentration of reading and writing process, and the incorporation of literature into other curricular areas. Our mathematics program, Everyday Math, focuses on investigations, thinking skills, and the use of manipulatives. Teachers utilize a wealth of resources and incorporate games and other hands on activities to support students’ learning. Students are encouraged to share various alternatives to solving a problem. To round out Coleman’s strong academic program is a hands-on approach in science, social studies, health, art, music, physical education, and library. All students use computers to access internet as well as other programs to create integrated projects. In Science, students experiment via virtual labs.

Our library houses thousands of books and resources for students and staff. Our art program incorporates history, critiques, and aesthetics highlighted during our May Art Show. Our physical education program teaches children to be skillful while maintaining good health through activity and fitness. Field Day is in May. Our music program incorporates appreciation, history, instrumental and choral performances through a creative process. Concerts take place in December and May.

Every class provides special programs for children and their families. Kindergartners and first graders participate in a sing-a-long with their music teacher, first graders host writing celebrations, second graders host a Patriotic Sing, third graders participate in a Lunar New Year Celebration, fourth graders host a Native American Celebration and fifth graders host an Explorer Museum. Students present projects at our Theme Fair and also participate in Student Council, Safety Patrol, Environmental Club, Morning Chorus, and instrumental music. Student Council led a Fun Week where the students and staff had a theme for each day. A Habitat Day was held in the spring where the garden was planted and each student planted seeds to go home. Staff, students and families lead a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year.

Our Home and School Association provides invaluable support in organizing our Theme Fair, Fall Festival, Book Fair, Art Docent Program, grade level Coleman Café and many fundraisers. Families volunteer their time in our library, classrooms, and after school activities, such as Movie Day & Bingo Night. Our H.S.A. raised money to purchase a water filling station, student standing desks, wobble core chairs, instruments, field trips, recess / sports equipment and assembly programs.

Our Child Study Team provides services to classified students and crisis intervention for all families. Our Intervention & Referral Services Committee assists with curriculum and behavior modifications to support teachers, students and their families. Our Gifted & Talented Education Program accommodates students in enrichment and accelerated classes. English as a Second Language addresses the needs of limited English-speaking students.

At Coleman, teachers, staff, and families strive to work together to provide students learning opportunities that support, challenge and engage all learners.
